Coaching and Mentoring

Picture of a group of six men and three women sitting and standing around a table working on laptops and writing in notebooks.

Overview

A woman in a colorful dress writes the following on a flipchart: “Social Accountability. 2. How can we improve access to information including financial and performance data? 3. How do we get all stakeholders engaged in accountability for UHC. 6. How do we empower and engage citizens around…

Inspired by the principles of the Coaching Approach, the Coaching and Mentoring community draws verified local and regional experts in Africa into a professional community as they work through resolutions of health system challenges.  ACS partnered with the Strategic Purchasing Africa Resource Center (SPARC) and Health Systems Strengthening Accelerator (HSSA) to test a technical assistance approach to connect health experts from across the African continent to continuously collaborate, mentor, and engage with one another.

The Coaching and Mentoring community is comprised of a group of African experts committed to building a unique technical assistance approach.  The community tests its approach in different countries, shares experiences back to the group, and contributes to the collective advancement of skills and knowledge.

Our Vision

The Coaching and Mentoring community approach aims to be recognized as experts in health system challenges. The goal is for their expertise to be requested by country governments looking to enhance their health systems. The group aspires to grow to become a go-to resource for health systems experts with coaching, mentoring and facilitation skills.

“An effective facilitation process begins with the facilitator investing time listening to the specific needs of all stakeholders.”
– Leandre Hounhoui, Benin

CMC Pillars

Building regional and global teams of coaches and mentors

  1. Build a database of experts – Coaching and Mentoring aims to build a publicly
accessible database of individuals and institutions with expertise in health system strengthening to better connect country needs for technical support with experts from their own countries and regions, supported by external experts as needed.
  2. Support regionally led coaching communities – Coaching and Mentoring aims to
establish regionally-led groups dedicated to the way technical assistance is provided
    to governments.

If you are interested in being included in the database kindly fill out the Global Database of Experts survey.

Enhancing technical knowledge of experts

  1. Basic training – upon acceptance in the Coaching and Mentoring community,
    members complete an orientation training.
  2. Continuous capacity development opportunities – presentations and capacity
development opportunities, such as an e-module to introduce the coaching approach and share tips for playing the role of a coach, are shared monthly to the community for continuous
    learning.

Testing learning

  1. Testing the approach – The Coaching and Mentoring approach will continuously be
    reviewed

The FORCE

Picture of a group of men and women posing for a picture on the grass in front of a building.

The FORCE is a group of CMC members who engage as thought partners to co-develop and improve the coaching and mentoring approach. Over time, the FORCE aims to become a formal institution to support the Coaching and Mentoring community.

It is envisioned that through the FORCE the value of the coaching, mentoring and facilitation approach will be recognized and increase demand by countries and development partners. This should in turn increase the credibility of the FORCE as a go-to resource for experts with coaching, mentoring and facilitation skills. It should also increase the FORCE’ credibility as a recognized and respected community responsible for the continuous development of the Community of Practice and body of knowledge for health financing technical experts in Africa.

FORCE Members

The strength of the Coaching and Mentoring Community is its wide range of expertise across sub-Saharan Africa.
